Inpatient Dual Diagnosis Treatment Facilities in Texas

A dual diagnosis center is a treatment facility that provides treatment for both mental disorders and substance abuse or substance dependence, using an integrated and concurrent approach. There are a number of dual diagnosis treatment centers across the state of Texas.
  1. History

    • Prior to 2007, the Texas Department of State Health services provided mental health and substance abuse services under two separate agencies: Texas Department of Mental Health Mental Retardation (TDMHMR) and the Texas Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse (TCADA). However after the conclusion of a pilot study, Texas state health authorities funded a group of health care contractors to provide coordinated integrated treatment programs of both conditions.

Co-Occurring Psychiatric and Substance Abuse Disorders

    • In many cases, patients with psychiatric disorders also are involved in some sort of substance abuse or chemical dependence such as drug abuse and alcoholism. This type of dual diagnoses in such patients is called Co-Occurring Psychiatric and Substance Abuse Disorders (COPSD). While treatment of these disorders can be done separately, and those who treat them have different expertise, in cases where they occur together in individuals it makes sense that the two treatment teams make a coordinated effort on behalf of the patients.

    Features

    • Some of the features of this treatment approach include assertiveness, flexibility and specialization on the part of service providers, stable living conditions for patients, engagement with patients and relapse prevention. For more on this treatment method see a link in Resources below.

    State-Sponsored COPSD Treatment Centers

    • The group of contractors chosen to be funded by the state health authorities became the Co-Occurring Psychiatric and Substance Abuse Disorders (COPSD) treatment centers. They specialize in concurrently treating mental health disorders that very often occur with or are exacerbated by substance abuse and dependence. These centers are scattered across Texas. See a link in Resources below for the list of the centers.

    Other Centers

    • There are a number of non-state funded dual diagnosis treatment services in Texas which provide a range of services and their costs vary one from the other. See a link in Resources below for a link to all private dual diagnosis centers in the state of Texas.
