Government Benefits Supplement Policy

Medicare Supplement Benefits or Medigap is offered by the U.S. government to people who already receive Medicare. The purpose of Medigap is to provide coverage for medical expenses that are not covered or are only partially covered by Medicare.
  1. Eligibility

    • You must be enrolled in part A and B of Medicare in order to qualify for Medigap. If you are 65 or older, you are guaranteed acceptance into the program without a medical screening. Otherwise, the insurance company associated with Medigap may request a medical screening and a physican's statement.

    Buying a Policy

    • As of June 1, 2010, Medigap plans must be standardized, although insurance companies are not obligated to sell every plan, though they must offer Medigap Plan A and Plan C or Plan F. Each plan, A-N offers different benefits and copays that you can compare to figure out which one is best for you. You can buy a Medigap policy from any company that is licensed to sell Medigap policies in your state.

    Coverage

    • Some examples of items that are covered by Medigap are hospital costs after medicare benefits are used up, at-home recovery and the first 3 pints of blood. Items that aren't covered by Medigap are long-term care, dental care, vision care, hearing aids and eyeglasses.
