How to Apply for Medicare in Louisiana Online
Medicare is a federal program that provides insurance benefits to people who are either over the age of 65 or have a permanent disability. Basic Medicare is administered by the State of Louisiana Social Security Administration, while extended Medicare benefits are facilitated through private insurance agencies. Enrollment in basic Medicare is an automatic process for some people. If you are currently receiving benefits through social security or the Railroad Retirement Board and are over 65 or under age 65 with a disability, you will automatically receive your Medicare card in the mail. Currently only portions of Medicare can be applied for online.Instructions

Decide how much coverage you need and if you're willing to pay monthly premiums and annual deductibles. The state of Louisiana offers a four-part Medicare system; Parts A, B, C and D. Basic coverage starts with Part A and is provided at no cost to most seniors. The coverage is limited, therefore you could end paying large out-of-pocket expenses for longer stays and advanced treatments. As you move up through the four parts of the program, your coverage increases but so do your payments for that coverage.

Sign up for Medicare Part A and B benefits through your local Social Security office if you are not eligible for automatic enrollment by calling 800-772-1213 or by visiting your local Social Security office. It is important to contact the office three months prior to turning 65 so that there is no delay in your benefits. If you worked for the railroad you will need to sign up through the Railroad Retirement Board.

Visit websites of private Medicare insurance providers if you decide you want additional Medicare coverage. Agencies such as Louisiana-Medicare.com and Healthplanone.com offer extended Medicare plans C and D which you can apply for online. You can also sign up for Medigap through these insurance providers. Medigap is similar to original Medicare benefits and is used to fill the gaps that Parts A and B have. Some Louisiana residents in certain income groups can get Parts C and D at reduced prices.
