How to Find Out Your Medicare UPIN Number
Medicare created the unique physician identification number (UPIN) to help identify every doctor in the United States who may bill to Medicare for services rendered. Although the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) discontinued the use of the UPIN in 2007 to move toward the national provider identifier (NPI), tools and directories are still available for physicians to find out their Medicare UPIN numbers.Instructions

1
Find your Medicare UPIN number through HME Data's online search tools. HME Data is a company that provides billing data to companies that do business with Medicare, such as home medical equipment companies and pharmacies. Its online search function allows vendors to locate a doctor's UPIN easily.

2
Search for your UPIN number through ECARE's UPIN lookup function on its web site. ECARE offers administrative tools that help doctors and other health care professionals perform billing and coding tasks.

3
Locate your Medicare UPIN number by purchasing the last version of the UPIN directory published by HHS. Although Medicare no longer recognizes UPIN for billing purposes, the directory is still available. As long as you were practicing medicine before 2007, your UPIN will be in the directory, searchable by your last name.
