How to Avoid the Medicare Gap

If you are 65 or older, knowing about the gaps in your Medicare coverage is extremely important. Original Medicare, Part A and Part B, may not give you all the health care benefits you need; however, you can pursue other avenues to get yourself sufficient coverage that will prepare you for any health deficiencies that may come your way.

  1. Options to Avoid Gaps in Medicare

    • 1

      Supplemental Medicare Insurance

One of the best options to fill the gaps in your Medicare coverage is to invest in a supplemental Medicare insurance, or Medigap. Twelve standardized Medigap plans exist and must be purchased from a private insurance company in your state. Find the plan that is right for your health needs and choose an insurance company that offers you that plan at a price you can afford.

      Medicare Advantage Plans

If you are a Medicare beneficiary, you are enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B. Medicare Part C, known as a Medicare Advantage Plan, is similar to Medicare Supplement Insurance in that you must purchase it from a private insurance company. Some Medicare Advantage Plans might provide prescription drug benefits, which newly purchased Medigap policies don't cover.

      Medicare Part D

Medicare beneficiaries who enroll in Part D of Medicare can receive prescription drug coverage. These plans are also run by private insurance companies and can be utilized by those with Medigap policies.
