Community Nursing Projects

Community nursing projects vary in size and scope, while the overall benefit to the community is the same: nurses can offer their skills, experience and compassion based on local needs and issues for particular groups in the community. Develop partnerships with nursing organizations, professional associations and educational institutions as a way of broadening your volunteer and support base. Partnering with known organizations also verifies the credibility of your project.
  1. Sexual and Reproductive Health

    • Give back to your community by setting up a project related to sexual and reproductive health. Booths can be set up in highly populated public spaces like schools or malls, where you can share information about these important health concerns. Birth control, cancer related to the reproductive system and sex organs and sexually transmitted diseases are all topics to include in your project display. Another community nursing project is a traveling clinic. Use a doctor's office after hours and set up a nursing clinic for screenings and tests. Verify your volunteers have paperwork that certifies they are a nurse before they begin on the project.

    New Mothers

    • Develop a program that is directed toward the needs of new mothers. A series of seminars on child care for newborns, breast feeding or pediatric nutrition are some topics you can incorporate into your project. Deliver the program in a public space such as a local community center or a town hall. Seek a corporate sponsor, such as a pediatric drug company, to offset program costs.

    Travel Medicine

    • Connect with students and frequent travelers in your area by hosting a display on the topic of travel medicine. Arrange a team of health professionals for an information session on travel medicine. Have professionals with expertise in visiting foreign countries discuss how the preventative vaccines vary from country to country or even region to region. Build on your information session by offering a clinic where vaccines are administered in the student health center. Keep the public safe by ensuring all of those returning to an area from abroad have appropriately protected themselves.

    Elderly Care

    • Have your community nursing project focus on the elderly. Partner with a local hospital or a senior center and offer to make house calls for basic in-home nursing services for seniors. Basic foot care, assistance with medication management and nutrition assistance for chronic disease associated with aging are all offerings for your in-home voluntary service. Recruit volunteers from a professional nursing association or regulatory body and ensure you can meet the demand for service.
