What is the difference between a practical nurse and vocational nurse?

Practical Nurse (PN)

* Also known as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)

* Typically have a one-year certificate or diploma in practical nursing

* Provide basic nursing care to patients under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN)

* May work in hospitals, clinics, long-term care facilities, or private homes

Vocational Nurse (VN)

* Similar to a practical nurse, but may have additional training and responsibilities

* Typically have a two-year associate degree in nursing

* May perform more complex nursing tasks than practical nurses, such as administering medications and starting IVs

* May work in the same settings as practical nurses, but may also work in specialty areas such as pediatrics, oncology, or critical care

In some states, the terms practical nurse and vocational nurse are used interchangeably. However, in other states, there are distinct differences between the two roles. Be sure to check with the nursing board in your state to learn more about the requirements for each type of nurse.
