Who maintains the safety records for nursing homes?
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is responsible for maintaining the safety records for nursing homes. CMS collects data on nursing homes through its annual survey and certification process. This process includes a comprehensive inspection of each nursing home, as well as a review of resident care records and other documentation. CMS uses this data to identify nursing homes that are not meeting federal quality and safety standards. These nursing homes are then placed on a list of Special Focus Facilities (SFFs). SFFs are subject to increased oversight and monitoring by CMS.
