What did nurses wear in world war 2?
Army Nurses:
* Brown Service Uniform: this uniform was a brown-colored one-piece dress featuring a shirt/blouse style that was closed all the way down the front. It had long, straight sleeves with cuffs and a matching belted waistline. With this particular uniform, military style flat-heel boots were worn in black or brown leather.
* Olive Drab (OD) Uniform: The basic OD uniform was used by many in a variety of services during the war. The nurses OD's were made from a cotton and wool mix and the design for the uniform was relatively simple. It consisted of a jacket with a stand-up collar, two breast pockets and a buttoned front, matching trousers, and a military-style cap. This could also be worn with brown, black, or olive drab boots.
* Winter Uniform: The winter uniform for Army Nurses was a double-breasted long olive-drab coat, a gray sweater, winter cap and scarf, as well as gloves.
Navy Nurses:
* Winter Navy Uniform: The winter navy uniform was comprised of a dark blue pea-coat, a round cap and a long wool overcoat when outside.
* Summer White Uniforms: The summer uniform worn by Navy nurses was much like that of the Army nurse's summer dress. These were all white uniforms with straight and short sleeves along with a matching white nurse cap.
* Operating Room Attire: Navy nurses, like Army nurses, wore surgical gowns over their uniforms when working within the surgical operating rooms.
Air Force Nurses:
* Flight Nurses Uniforms: The uniform for flight nurses consisted of a jacket and skirt combo similar to the basic Army style uniform, but the colors were a more of an Air Force blue. These uniforms were made of a wool gabardine type material to help with warmth and comfort.
* Summer White Nurse Uniforms: This uniform was a one-piece white dress with collar, short sleeves, and belt that came to just below the knee. With these uniforms, white stockings and closed-toe white or black shoes and the nursing cap were worn.
Accessories Across the Services:
Each of the nurse's uniforms could be worn with a variety of nurse accessories, such as wrist watches, black handbags and, the most iconic symbol, the nurse’s cap. The nurse’s cap was the universal symbol associated with the nursing profession.
