Stretcher Types

Stretchers are an important product in the field of medical equipment. They come in several types and sizes. Whether used for vehicle transport or for carrying an injured person a long distance on foot to medical attention, the right stretcher in the right situation can save a life.

  1. Basket Stretcher

    • A basket stretcher is used in situations when an injured person needs transportation by foot to medical attention. This could be a hunting trip in the wild or even a boating adventure gone wrong. The stretcher disassembles in two halves, and if needed for rescue assembles in seconds. Pins secure the two halves together, and four straps are standard. Some add-ons for this stretcher are a plastic rack that goes through the back of the trunk section and a strap-adjusted footrest.

    Ambulance Stretcher

    • An ambulance stretcher, also known as a litter or gurney, consists of a solid frame and a heavy-duty cloth that stretches across it. Paramedics depend on this type of stretcher to transport injured people safely to the hospital. The ambulance often gives a rough ride. This type of stretcher absorbs part of the impact to prevent further injury. Ambulance stretchers often adjust in position, aiding the paramedic in tending to the injured person's needs.

    Folding Stretcher

    • A folding stretcher is used to transport the injured from the inside of a building to an ambulance stretcher. It is portable and folds in half for convenient storage. This stretcher is also light in weight when carried, and made of high strength materials. It often has a PVC coated cover that resists such things as mildew and bloodstains. This stretcher is easy to wipe clean with a damp cloth. Folding stretchers are available in several sizes to fit even the largest person.

    Pole Stretcher

    • The military often uses pole stretchers to transport the wounded to a medical facility. The stretchers have heavy-duty poles that extend on each side so two men can carry it. Pole stretchers also are lightweight, and have nonslip handgrips for firm control while handling. The material between the two poles is durable, and it will not absorb blood or bodily fluids. The stretcher rolls up for convenient storage.
