How to Be Confident and Overcome Shyness
Shy people account for almost 50 percent of the population, according to Bernardo J. Carducci, author of "Shyness: A Bold New Approach.". While some merely feel a little nervous around new people, others get so uneasy they sweat profusely, feel nauseous and blush excessively. Shyness becomes social anxiety disorder when it prevents a person from engaging in normal daily activities, such as attending school, going to work or showing up to social gatherings. If you find yourself avoiding social situations or passing over good opportunities because you feel too nervous, you can use strategies to overcome your shyness and gain self-confidence.Instructions

1
Recognize that you possess qualities people admire. Expect others to enjoy your company once they get to know you. If you anticipate being mocked and rejected, you will only feel more shy and nervous.

2
Practice deep breathing exercises. When you feel shy or anxious, a deep breathing exercise may help you feel more relaxed in social situations. Psychologist Nancy Wesson suggests taking several deep breathes from your abdomen, and holding them for a few seconds after each inhale. Exhale slowly, releasing the air from your abdomen.

Join a shyness support group. Support groups allow you to interact with people who share similar experiences. When you join a support group for shy people, you can share your problems and receive advice from people who understand what you're feeling.

4
Volunteer at an organization that is important to you, such as an animal shelter or a homeless shelter. Concentrating on helping others takes the pressure off you, making it easier to interact with people who share your interests.

Ask questions during a conversation to take the focus off yourself. Find out what the other person does for a living or what hobbies he or she enjoys. In addition to practicing your speaking skills, the person you speak to will recognize that you are interested in learning more about him or her.

Use humor in a conversation. According to Bernardo Carducci, writing in "Psychology Today," humor lightens the mood and alleviates negativity. By telling a joke or laughing during a social interaction, you may be able to reduce your feelings of nervousness.
