Xanax & Snoring

Xanax is a medication used to treat anxiety, panic and depression. Some side effects are associated with Xanax, including certain changes in sleep patterns that could impact whether an individual snores during sleep.
  1. Medication

    • Xanax should be taken only if prescribed by a doctor and should not be purchased anywhere other than a pharmacy. The drug can be dangerous and habit-forming if not acquired and taken under medical supervision. Do not consume alcohol while taking the drug.

    Sleep Side Effects

    • Insomnia and drowsiness are potential side effects of taking Xanax. Since sleep patterns may be impacted by the drug, snoring is another potential side effect.

    Snoring

    • People who do not normally snore may begin doing so after taking medications. Medications, like Xanax, can lead to increased muscle relaxation during sleep. The muscles of the palate, tongue, neck and pharynx become more relaxed, which results in a smaller opening in the airway. This smaller airway creates tissue vibration and leads to snoring.

    Remedies

    • If sleep cycles and snoring become a problem while taking Xanax, try to regulate your sleep patterns as much as possible so you are not overly tired when falling asleep at night. Breathing strips also can help to increase airflow, and a healthier lifestyle and weight loss sometimes can improve quality of sleep and decrease snoring.
