1
Seek help from a mental health professional such as a psychiatrist, counselor, therapist or psychologist. If your physician has diagnosed you with GAD, he will likely refer you to a mental health professional. You should feel comfortable in sharing your thoughts and feelings with this person. If you do not feel comfortable, seek another mental health professional.

2
Take your medication if one was prescribed to you by your physician or psychiatrist. It is important that you take your medication as prescribed without missing a pill. You may have to try several different medications before finding one that is right for you. Also, there are times when a combination of medication may be required to address multiple symptoms.
-
3
Join a support group for people with GAD and other anxiety disorders. It may help you to discuss your worries and frustrations with like-minded individuals and get help from others who suffer from the same illness. Support groups are offered in person and online. To find a local support group, ask your mental health professional for a reference or locate one through your city or state associations which are experienced in helping those with mental health conditions.

4
Practice self-help techniques alongside taking your prescribed medication. These include stress management and meditation, making necessary lifestyle changes and getting support from your friends and family.
