Ballet for Anxiety

Exercise is often prescribed or suggested as a treatment for stress and anxiety disorders. Ballet, a dance form using graceful, precise movements, conscious use of breath and accompanied to classical music, is an ideal exercise form for combating anxiety.
  1. Ballet as a Communal Activity

    • Anyone can benefit from the positive social aspects of ballet class.

Being with others in a supportive, safe environment while pursuing a hobby or art form can help reduce anxiety.

    Exercise Away Stress

    • Sweat out stress in ballet class.

Any form of exercise is an excellent antidote for stress and anxiety. Ballet appears deceptively easy but a standard hour-and-a-half ballet class will provide an intense workout.

    Breath

    • Breathing with ballet movement can ease stress and anxiety.

All dance forms utilize a specific breathing system that puts the body at ease and prepares it for physical work. Breathing exercises alone are often prescribed for patients with anxiety and integrating conscious breath work with the physical demands of ballet class increases those benefits.

    Confidence

    • Mastering dance steps can build confidence.

Executing a move in class that was previously thought impossible, watching the body become stronger and improving health and artistic skills can all add to self-confidence, which can go a long way in fighting anxiety, stress and depression.

    Ballet-Based Exercise Methods

    • Reap the benefits of ballet in an informal exercise class.

There are some exercise methods based on ballet barre moves. The New York City Ballet Workout, Ballecore, Balocity and Balletone are some codified exercise methods taught at gyms and available on DVD.
