How to Overcome Fear After a Car Accident

It is normal to be scared to climb back into a car after an accident. People develop phobias after something frightening happens to them. The trick to overcoming your fear is to face it slowly and rationally in controlled circumstances. Being able to climb into a car and travel is important--it enables you to carry on your life. Don't start by getting behind the wheel on an interstate highway. Instead, take a deep breath, turn the key and follow these steps to overcome your fear.

Instructions

    • 1

Sit in your car without turning it on. Let yourself remember the feel of the seat, the bend of your ankle on the gas pedal, the feel of your hands on the wheel. Become accustomed to the car again. If it's been some time since you were in the driver's seat, it will feel alien. Take the time to let it be normal again.

    • 2

Turn the key. The sound and feel of the engine starting may shock you at first. Give yourself time to remember the rumble of the car, the vibrations from the engine. Slowly push the gas pedal to accustom yourself to the sound of the engine revving up.

    • 3

Drive around an empty parking lot. Have a friend sit in the passenger seat to monitor your progress, and so that they can drive you home if you don't feel comfortable.

    • 4

Take a trip around the block at a time when traffic will be light. Go slowly. Keep the windows down so that you don't feel trapped. Wear your seat belt on.

    • 5

Drive somewhere that excites you. It will be easier to take your first major car trip if you're looking forward to the destination. Drive during the day when there isn't a lot of traffic. That way you won't be overwhelmed.

    • 6

Breathe steadily and deeply when you're nervous. A common sign of fear and anxiety is fast breathing or the feeling that you can't get enough oxygen. Staying calm and expecting the signs of anxiety can help you to face them and continue driving when they first start.

See a therapist. If the fear is too deep-rooted, standard methods to overcome it may not work for you. A therapist can help you realign yourself mentally so that you drive again without fear.
