Reason for Communication Anxiety

When a person experiences physical or emotional stress as the result of a situation, this is often classified as anxiety. According to Health Guidance, one of the most common forms of anxiety is communication anxiety. People that have communication anxiety usually have a phobia pertaining to public speaking.

    • According the University of Texas at Austin, the most common cause of communication anxiety is the conspicuousness involved when speaking. Conspicuousness relates to being the center of an audience's attention. People are often anxious in new situations. Most people have some degree of apprehension when speaking in a new environment.

    Past Experiences

    • Past experiences can also cause communication anxiety. If a person has had a terrible or difficult speaking experience in the past, the anxiety could manifest itself again.

    • Communication anxiety is not irreversible. Fortunately, there are ways that an individual can overcome communication anxiety. However, it can be difficult for a person that has suffered from communication anxiety for a long time to overcome the problem.

    • One treatment for communication anxiety is cognitive behavioral therapy. This form of therapy is a psychotherapeutic method in which an individual aims to influence dysfunctional emotions.
