Medications for Anxiety & Panic Disorder
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, six million people over the age of 18 suffer from panic disorder in the United States alone, with an additional 3.1 percent suffering from generalized anxiety disorder. Many medications can help sufferers cope.-
Types
-
Three types of medication help panic and anxiety disorder. Beta blockers, which are typically taken for short periods, help by regulating physical aspects of anxiety such as excess sweating and trembling. Antidepressants help anxiety by regulating chemicals in the brain, and anti-anxiety medications relax muscles and suppress feelings of panic.
Time Frame
-
Anti-anxiety medications and beta blockers are best taken for short periods of time because it's possible to develop a tolerance for them--meaning that eventually you will need higher dosages to obtain the same results. Antidepressants, which may take up to four weeks to work, can be taken for longer periods of time with less risk of developing an addiction; still, you shouldn't stop taking antidepressants without speaking to your doctor about it first.
Benefits
-
By easing the symptoms of anxiety--things like feelings of panic, dread, stress in social situations, excess sweating and trembling--medications for anxiety and panic disorder help you cope with your problems and fears so that you can live a happier, calmer, anxiety-free life.
Considerations
-
In addition to taking medication for panic and anxiety disorder, consider improving your diet, adding daily exercise to your schedule, and seeing a therapist. A healthy diet and regular exercise can reduce stress, while seeing a therapist will help you resolve any underlying problems that contribute to your anxiety.
Warning
-
You may experience side effects such as dizziness, headaches, diarrhea, constipation, or fatigue while taking medications for anxiety and panic disorder. There are other side effects, and some medications may be addictive; be sure to discuss anxiety and panic medications with your doctor and to take them exactly as prescribed.
