Pharmaceutical Treatment for Severe Anxiety

Many different types of medication are available for the treatment of anxiety. Patients may have to try several medications or a combination of medications before getting relief from severe anxiety.
  1. Anxiety Disorders

    • Anxiety may occur as the result of generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and social anxiety disorder. Any of these disorders can cause severe anxiety.

    Benzodiazepines

    • Benzodiazepines may be used to treat severe anxiety. These medications work quickly to reduce anxiety. Benzodiazepines include Ativan, Dalmane, Klonopin, Halcion, Librium, Restoril, Serax, Tranxene, Valium and Xanax.

    Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs)

    • SSRIs are considered antidepressants, but they can also help reduce anxiety. These medications may have to be taken for several weeks before they take affect. SSRIs include Celexa, Lexapro, Luvox, Paxil, Prozac and Zoloft.

    Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCAs)

    • TCAs may also be used to treat anxiety. These medications include Adapin, Anafranil, Aventyl, Elavil, Ludiomil, Norpramin, Pamelor, Sinequan, Surmontil, Tofranil and Vivactil.

    Side Effects

    • Almost all medications have side effects. Common side effects of anxiety medications include nausea, upset stomach, dizziness, headaches and sexual dysfunction.
