How to Make a Doctor's Appointment for Depression
The first step in getting diagnosed and starting a treatment plan for depression is to make a doctor's appointment. It isn't difficult to make an appointment, but it can be something that makes many people nervous. Despite the fact that it is a very common condition, some people still worry that admitting they might have a mental illness will cause problems in their lives. Others worry that being diagnosed with depression will mean that there really is something wrong with them, as opposed to just believing they are just having a series of bad days or weeks. Getting an appointment can help to alleviate these worries and help you to get started on the path to recovery.Instructions

Most people know that depression is characterized by feelings of sadness or having "the blues." There are a lot of other common symptoms, however, including fatigue, restlessness, difficulty sleeping and concentrating, inability to control negative thoughts, change in appetite and even no longer being as interested in activities you used to enjoy. People have described depression as "living in a black hole" or feeling lifeless. If these symptoms are something that you've been experiencing, you might have depression.

Call your regular physician. If you don't have one, ask family and friends for recommendations. If you know someone who has been treated for depression, ask if he would recommend his doctor. If you don't have anyone to ask, or if you don't feel comfortable asking, search online for doctors in your area who specialize in mental health. There are a variety of websites that allow patients to rate and review their physicians; this can be a wonderful way to pick out a doctor that will fit your needs.

When you talk to the receptionist, ask to make an appointment with your chosen doctor. When you are asked for the reason for the appointment, state that you think that you might be suffering from depression. You will probably be asked about which time would work best. Choosing an early morning appointment (ideally right after they open) may get you in sooner. Copy down the date and time when the receptionist sets your appointment. Immediately write it down in your planner or calendar so that you don't forget. Setting a reminder on your cell phone can also help you to remember your appointment.
