Strattera Treatment for Anxiety

The anti-anxiety medication Stattera is a drug taken orally. The generic name for Strattera is atomoxetine. Stattera is most commonly used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, along with related anxiety from the condition.

    • The Mayo Clinic says that Stattera is used together with social, education and psychological treatments as part of a program to calm ADHD patients.

    • AntiAnxietyMedications.org reports that researchers believe that atomoxetine works by affecting the neurotransmitters of the brain. This affects how the nerves in the brain communicate with each other.

    Side Effect in Children

    • The most common side effects of Strattera in children are upset stomach, a decrease in appetite and nausea.

    • Drugs.com reports that parents should be aware that in some cases children and adolescents may increase suicidal thoughts and should monitor them carefully to look for changes in behavior.

      RXList.com states that the average risk of suicidal ideation was only 0.4 percent. There were no suicides reported during the drug trials.

    • With adults, common side effects include difficulty sleeping, dry mouth, upset stomach and sexual side effects.
