Signs & Symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a condition that can develop after a person has experienced a traumatic event, such as sexual assault, a natural disaster, a terrorist attack or military combat. Symptoms of PTSD can include flashbacks, avoidance of possible triggers, emotional numbness or hyperarousal.
  1. Flashbacks

    • People suffering from PTSD may suffer flashbacks and nightmares. These can be triggered by certain sights or sounds.

    Avoidance

    • People with PTSD often avoid events or places that remind them of their traumatic experience. They may also resist talking about or remembering the experience.

    Emotions

    • PTSD can lead to emotional numbness, depression or feelings of guilt.

    Hyperarousal

    • People with PTSD might be always tense, easily startled or have angry outbursts. They may also have difficulty sleeping.

    Effects

    • PTSD can also lead to substance abuse problems, difficulties in jobs and relationships and feelings of shame and despair.
