Medications Used in the Treatment of Anxiety in Kids
Anxiety is a common but often overlooked issue in children. However, when diagnosed, it is important to learn about the medications used for treating your child.-
Benzodiazepines
-
Benzodiazepines such as Valium and Klonopin are used to treat acute anxiety. These drugs are quite effective but should only be used in severe situations as dependency can develop from long-term use.
Serotonergic Agents
-
Antidepressants such as Paxil and Prozac are also used to treat anxiety and are effective and well-tolerated. However, some children may experience headaches, stomach upset and insomnia. Most doctors will recommend serotonergic agents as the first line when treating anxiety.
Tricyclic Antidepressants
-
Tricyclic antidepressants are older than serotonergic agents and have more side effects, but these drugs, such as Tofranil, are still effective when treating anxiety. These drugs are prescribed when serotonergic agents are not tolerated. Sides effects include confusion, dizziness and dryness in the mouth.
Serotonin/Norepinephrine
-
Drugs like Effexor are also well tolerated in children and are effective. One drawback is that they will take several weeks to become effective. Once again, different drugs work for different people, so your doctor may try out Effexor if Prozac and Tofranil are ineffective or cause side effects.
Tranquilizers
-
Only used in very severe cases, tranquilizers such as Zyprexa are only used when anxiety distorts your child's view of realty. These drugs are habit-forming and highly sedative and should only be used in emergency situations.
