How to Suppress Anxiety

When you're feeling anxious, you aren't the only one being affected by your mood. Family members can also feel your anxiety and have their own emotions turn dark because of it. Rather than creating a negative environment at home or at work, you can suppress your anxiety and lessen the effects of the bad mood. Not only that, you'll feel better about life and happier with your situation if you can effectively reduce your anxiety.

Make a list of everything you enjoy about life. If your anxiety is limited to just one area, such as work, make a list of everything you like about your job. A general list of happy thoughts is also helpful. Post the list in your cubicle wall or on your refrigerator so you can see it every day. Consider printing a small list and adding it to your wallet for portable inspiration.

Take a deep breath whenever you feel your anxiety increasing. Focus on relaxing both your body and your mind. Slowly count to 10 while thinking of the things that are good in your life. Taking a minute to focus on breathing and good thoughts will greatly suppress your anxiety.

Get regular physical activity. Go for a walk around the block or for a hike in the woods. The exercise will not only let your mind relax, but will make you physically healthier as well.

Talk to someone about what's making you feel anxious. Choose a friend or relative who is a good listener and who won't judge you for your feelings. Discuss with him why you're feeling this way. If he offers you advice, listen with an open mind as he may have some good ideas of how you can feel better.

Focus on eating healthy meals. The Mayo Clinic suggests avoiding fatty foods as well as processed foods and snacks full of sugar. A healthy diet contains vitamins and minerals such as B vitamins that can make you feel better and less anxious.
