What Are the Dosages of Librium?

Librium is the brand name of the prescription drug chlordiazepoxide hydrochloride. Doctors prescribe Librium for anxiety, nervousness and symptoms of alcohol withdrawal.
  1. Types

    • Librium is available in 5mg, 10mg and 25mg tablets.

    Features

    • For mild to moderate anxiety, doctors prescribe 5mg to 10mg of Librium three to four times per day, while severe anxiety is usually treated with 20mg to 25mg three to four times per day, reports RxList. Elderly patients and children typically receive 5mg of Librium two to four times per day.

    Time Frame

    • When taken to relax a patient prior to surgery, a higher dosage of 50mg to 100mg is given one hour prior to surgery.

    Risks

    • Taking too much Librium has the potential to cause drowsiness, confusion, loss of reflexes and coma.

    Considerations

    • If you have a history of liver or kidney disease or a genetic disease called poryphia, it may not be safe for you to take Librium at any dosage, warns the Mayo Clinic.
