Anti-Anxiety Medicine List

Stress causes anxiety, which is a normal reaction. However, if it becomes excessive, it can interfere immensely with normal life. At this point, it is an anxiety disorder. The most common anxiety disorders are obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), social anxiety disorder and generalized anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders are treated with therapy, medicine or both. While medicine does not cure the anxiety disorder, it does treat the symptoms while the patient undergoes therapy. There are multiple medicine options for anxiety, but some are prescribed more frequently.
  1. Alprazolam

    • Xanax, Xanax XR, Apo-Alpraz, Niravam, Nu-Alpraz, and Novo-Alprazol are the brand names for the drug, alprazolam. Alprazolam is a short to intermediate acting antianxiety medicine. Some common side effects of alprazolam are blurred vision, drowsiness, dizziness and orthostatic hypotension.

    Buspirone

    • BuSpar, BuSpar Dividose and VanSpar are the brand names for the drug, buspirone. It is an antianxiety and sedative medication. Because buspirone has not shown much potential for abuse, it is a good antianxiety medicine choice for someone with a history of substance abuse. Some common side effects are tachycardia (fast heart rate), heart palpitations, headache, dizziness, numbness, insomnia, nausea, constipation or diarrhea, sweating and rash.

    Clonazepam

    • The brand name for clonazepam is Klonopin. Klonopin is an anticonvulsant that is also prescribed to treat anxiety. Nausea, constipation, drowsiness and increased saliva are some common side effects of clonazepam.

    Lorazepam

    • Ativan is the brand name for lorazepam. Ativan is used as an antianxiety, sedative and hypnotic medication. Some common side effects of lorazepam are blurred vision, orthostatic hypotension, drowsiness and dizziness.

    Propranolol

    • Inderal, InnoPran XL and Inderal LA are brand names for the drug, propanolol. It is an antihypertensive, antianginal and antidysrhythmic medicine that is also prescribed to treat anxiety disorders. Fatigue and bronchospasm are common side effects.

    Oxazepam

    • The brand name commonly used for oxazepam is Serax. Serax is a sedative, hypnotic and antianxiety drug. Some common side effects are orthostatic hypotension, drowsiness, dizziness and blurred vision.

    Trifluoperazine

    • Stelazine, Triflurin, and Suprazine are brand names for trifluoperazine. It is a neuroleptic and antipsychotic drug sometimes prescribed for anxiety disorders. Orthostatic hypotension, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, rash and headaches are common side effects.
