Anxiety Diseases

Anxiety disorders are mental illnesses that can range from mild to severe. Anxiety is considered a biological brain disease, similar to depression. Anxiety disorders can be managed effectively through treatment with a mental health professional. If left untreated, anxiety can lead to poor functioning, relationship conflict and/or substance abuse.
  1. Identification

    • Identifying symptoms of anxiety includes looking for unrealistic worries and fears. Physical symptoms such as muscle tension, sleep difficulties, stomachaches, headaches and dizziness without known medical cause may also be characteristic of anxiety disorders.

    Types

    • Diagnosing the type of anxiety disease or disorder will be dependent on the symptoms a person is experiencing. Common types of anxiety disorders include generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Entering into a relationship with a therapist who can treat anxiety disorders is beneficial. Cognitive behavioral therapy is particularly helpful because it teaches clients ways of managing the irrational and distorted thinking that contributes to anxiety.

    Medication Options

    • Managing anxiety with medication is another treatment option. Benzodiazepines and most antidepressants are effective in calming symptoms of anxiety.

    Famous Ties

    • Anxiety diseases and disorders affect famous people as well. John Madden, Carly Simon, Barbara Streisand and Oprah Winfrey have all reportedly suffered from a form of anxiety.
