GAD Information

Generalized anxiety disorder is characterized by excessive worry, tension and anxiety nearly every day for at least six months. GAD affects twice as many women as men totaling approximately six million American adults every year. It is a treatable disorder though and many people who seek treatment live comfortable lives despite the diagnosis.
  1. General Symptoms

    • Symptoms of GAD include an exaggerated sense of worry that is pervasive across all areas of the sufferer's life. It may be centered on certain situations at times or be more general in which the mere idea of surviving another day invokes anxiety.

    Bodily Symptoms

    • People with GAD tend to experience their emotions and stresses in their bodies. Many suffer from chronic stomach problems, headaches, muscle tension, fatigue and hot flashes.

    Therapy

    • Cognitive-behavioral therapy is the most commonly used modality in the treatment of anxiety disorders and phobias. CBT helps clients to recognize the thoughts that are causing them to experience anxiety and develop new ways of thinking and behaving that are healthier. CBT is often considered the first line of treatment.

    Medicine

    • There are a few categories of psychotropic medications that can be used for anxiety disorders. Types of medications used to treat GAD include antidepressants and benzodiazepines.

    Exercise

    • Exercise is recommended as an additional form of treatment. Yoga and meditation can be vital in creating an overall feeling of relaxation in the body. Daily cardiovascular exercise as well can increase endorphins giving the body and mind a greater sense of well-being.

    Famous Ties

    • Famous people who have also dealt with anxiety disorders include Abraham Lincoln, Barbara Bush, Alanis Morisette, Oprah Winfrey, Sally Field, Burt Reynolds, Goldie Hawn, John Madden and John Steinbeck.
