Ativan Side Effects

Ativan is in a class of medications call benzodiazepines. It is prescription medication used to treat anxiety and panic disorders. Lorazepam is the generic name for this drug.

Common Side Effects

• Ativan is a drug that affects the central nervous system. People tend to feel sleepy, relaxed and calm when taking this medication.

Mixed with Alcohol

• You should not drink alcohol when taking Ativan. Alcohol can increase the effects of Ativan, as well as induce dizziness, affect coordination and your ability to safely drive a car.

During Pregnancy

• It is recommended that pregnant women refrain from using this medication. Ativan has been known to cause birth defects to an unborn child. Risk to a breastfeeding infant, however, has not yet been determined.

Habit-Forming

• Prolonged use of any benzodiazepine, such as Ativan, can become habit-forming. If you have a history of substance abuse, it is recommended that you take a medication that does not increase your risk for developing an addiction.

Respiratory Side Effects

• Because of its affects on the respiratory system, Ativan can set off breathing problems in people who have bronchitis, asthma or emphysema. If you have such a disease or disorder, you may need a lower dose of this medication.

Children

• The Mayo Clinic reports that studies have not yet determined how Ativan affects children. To avoid the possibility of an adverse side effect, it is best to avoid prescribing this medication to kids less than 12 years of age.
