Anxiety Explained

According to the Anxiety Disorders Association of America (ADAA), an estimated 40 million adults suffer from an anxiety disorder. Untreated, anxiety can disable a sufferer from functioning in life. There are treatment options for those who suffer from anxiety.
  1. Types

    • There are are five major types of anxiety disorders: Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD); obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD); panic disorder; post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD); and social anxiety disorder (social phobia). People can also suffer from specific phobias, such as agoraphobia.

    Symptoms

    • Sweating, hot or cold flashes, choking or smothering sensations, racing heart, labored breathing, trembling, chest pain, faintness, numbness, nausea, disorientation, feelings of dying, losing control and feeling like you are losing your mind are all symptoms of an anxiety disorder.

    Causes

    • Anxiety disorders can be caused by a chemical or hormonal imbalance, drug or alcohol use, stress or situational events.

    Medications

    • Medications normally prescribed for anxiety disorder include selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), tricyclic anti-depressants, benzodiazepines, beta blockers and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).

    Types of Therapy

    • Different kinds of therapy found effective for anxiety treatment include psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, relaxation therapy and exposure therapy.
