What Is Hydroxyz HCL?

Hydroxyz HCL is a type of antihistamine that is prescribed as a treatment for a person's anxiety and other psychological disorders. Since it is an antihistamine, it also has the ability to treat symptoms of an allergic reaction, including itching. This drug is used only for short-term relief and is rarely given as a long-term treatment option for any medical condition.

    • Hydroxyz HCL works by blocking the body's histamine response while also affecting certain areas of the brain to create a calm feeling in the patient. The drug is typically given for anxiety disorders and dementia to provide short-term relief. It may also be administered to a patient prior to a surgery or other stressful event to provide relaxation.

    • Besides anxiety disorders, doctors may decide to give Hydroxyz HCL if the patient has a reaction to a certain allergen, such as another medication. Hydroxyz HCL can stop itching and irritation from occurring due to allergies. In other cases, the drug is used to help other narcotic drugs relieve pain more effectively.

    Types

    • Hydroxyz HCL is given either orally or by an injection administered by a healthcare professional. A generic is available of the drug and is called hydroxyzine. The injections are given in 25 mg to 50 mg dosage amounts while the tablets come in 10 mg to 50 mg versions. For children and adults that have difficulty swallowing tablets, a 10 mg syrup is available.

    • Hydroxyz HCL has also been used to treat allergic skin reactions, as well as to curb nausea and vomiting. It is important that you use the medicine as directed and measure out the exact dosage with a dose measuring spoon or cup if given the syrup. A doctor will also recommend that you avoid medications that may interfere with the drug, including sedatives, cough syrups, cold medications and muscle relaxers.

    • You must let your doctor know if you have any side effects while taking Hydroxyz HCL. The most common reported side effects include dry mouth and drowsiness. You may also have an upset stomach, so it is recommended that you take the drug with food.
