Watch how your child behaves around others. Is he extremely shy around new people?

Observe your child's behavior in social settings. Does he cling to you excessively? Young children may cry if put down or hide behind the parents.

Look for irritable behavior in social situations. Children with social anxiety disorder may exhibit extreme irritability or crankiness.

Observe your child's willingness to try new things such as sports, games or other activities. Children with this disorder often fear trying new things. They may fear failing and being embarrassed in front of others.

Look at your child when he talks to you or someone else. Does he/she make eye contact or does the child avoid looking directly at you by turning his head or gazing at the floor?

Take a look at where your child sits or stands at social functions or gatherings. Is he the one sitting in the back of the room or standing in a corner? Children with social anxiety disorder don't like to stand out in a crowd and they avoid being the center of attention.
