Connection Between Bipolar Disorder & Cushing's Syndrome
-
Cushing's Syndrome
-
The Mayo Clinic states that "Cushing's Syndrome is a condition that occurs when your body is exposed to high levels of the hormone cortisol for a long time." Cushing's causes weight gain, depression and anxiety, and it requires oral corticosteroid medication.
Bipolar Disorder
-
Bipolar disorder presents with similar symptoms as Cushing's including depression and anxiety; however, oral corticosteroid medication is ineffective.
Correlation
-
According to Unbound Medline, patients with Cushing's were treated as bipolar and then became symptom free after having a tumor (often associated with Cushing's) removed, lowering the hormone cortisol in the body.
Misdiagnosis
-
If you have been diagnosed with bipolar and have the symptoms of Cushing's Syndrome, consult with your physician immediately.
Tips
-
Be sure to avoid taking bipolar medications for Cushing's or vice versa. If you experience symptoms of both, a physician should be able to distinguish between the two.
