Alcohol & Seroquel

Seroquel is a drug prescribed to patients with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. It is not recommended that people take Seroquel with alcohol. Doing so can cause the drug to be ineffective, and can be very dangerous.
  1. Metabolization

    • Almost all doctors recommend not combining alcohol with Seroquel. This is because Seroquel is metabolized in the liver and can compete with the metabolization of alcohol, making the effects of alcohol much worse.

    Increased side effects

    • Drinking alcohol with seroquel makes certain side effects of the drug more common and more severe. Seroquel is known to lower blood pressure and cause drowsiness; combined with alcohol, these effects can be dangerous.

    Mental health

    • People with any mental illness are advised to avoid alcohol, regardless of any drugs they have been prescribed. Alcohol often causes mental conditions to become worse.

    Self-medication

    • Some people might self-medicate their bipolar disorder with alcohol, but alcohol is a depressant. Seroquel without alcohol is a more effective treatment.

    Tolerance

    • Seroquel greatly lowers a person's tolerance to alcohol. It will take fewer drinks for a person on Seroquel to lose self-control.
