Misconceptions of Bipolar Disorder
There are many misconceptions about bipolar disorder and those who have it. These misconceptions can make living with the disorder even more difficult than it already is. The people around a bipolar person are one of the most important parts to their living a normal life. That's why it is vital that all understand the facts about this disease.-
It's Not Real
-
Some still believe that claiming bipolar disorder is just a selfish excuse for certain people to behave the way that they do. This could not be further from the truth. Bipolar Disorder is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. Nobody chooses this disorder. There is an overwhelming abundance of scientific evidence that proves this.
They Were Raised Wrong
-
This disease is not because of the bipolar persons upbringing. You do not get this disease. You are born with it. It's true that times of stress can cause episodes to be worse, but the only way the parents are at fault is for their genes. Bipolar disorder is genetic.
Normal lives
-
It is completely possible for a person with bipolar disorder to live a normal life. Bipolar disorder effects around 1 in 100 people, and most live with it rather quietly. If properly treated bipolar disorder can be very manageable and it does not prevent people living the life they choose.
Mania and Depression
-
Bipolar disorder can be a misleading name for this disease because it implies polar opposites. The disorder is characterized by rapid mood swings between depression and mania. Mania is not the polar opposite of depression. If a person is manic it does not mean that they are just very happy. Mania is a period of high mood, which can mean racing thoughts, losing sleep, inability to concentrate, paranoia etc.
There's a Cure
-
Unfortunately there is no way to cure bipolar disorder. It is often effectively treated with medications and therapy, but if this treatment is discontinued the disease may return.
