Non-Medical Treatment for Bipolar Disorder

For bipolar disorder, the goals of treatment include extending the time between episodes, preventing the depression-to-mania cycle and reducing the severity of episodes. People with this illness may need a well-rounded treatment plan that includes both medical and non-medical treatments.
  1. Psychotherapy

    • Counseling helps people with bipolar disorder reduce stress, regulate moods and change thinking patterns that may trigger episodes.

    Regular Sleep Paterns

    • Another non-medical approach to treating bipolar disorder involves developing a regular sleep pattern. Insomnia may cause chemical disruptions in the body, potentially triggering bipolar episodes.

    Exercise

    • Exercise acts as a mood stabilizer in people with bipolar disorder. The benefits come from exercising at least 30 minutes, three to five times a week.

    Omega-3 Fatty Acids

    • Fish oil, a source of omega-3 fatty acids, may improve mood swings, especially when combined with medication. Food sources of omega-3 fatty acids include salmon, albacore tuna, flaxseed and walnuts.

    Warning

    • Don't take supplements without discussing them first with your health care provider. Certain supplements, such as St. John's wort and SAMe, sometimes may trigger mania.
