Signs of Bipolar in Children
Doctors used to believe that only adults could be affected by bipolar disorder, but children are now being diagnosed with this condition. Because kids have such different and vivid personalities, it can be difficult to tell whether your child might be bipolar.-
Mania
-
Kids who are manic may laugh at nothing, seem excessively silly (which can be hard to judge in little kids), need less sleep than usual, and believe they have magic powers. This is different than pretending to be a superhero or a fairy; these kids actually believe they can do things like fly or read minds.
Depression
-
During a depressive phase, your child may seem sad and cry a lot, not want to do things he once enjoyed, or complain of physical pain.
Other Symptoms
-
A child with bipolar disorder may be grouchy, irritable or bossy. Her school performance may suffer and she may lose friends.
Normal vs. Bipolar Behavior
-
Having a kid who laughs a lot is hardly a bad thing, and most kids go through a bossy, grumpy stage. It's time to seek help if your child's emotional responses are inappropriate (laughing when the dog dies, for example) or are causing problems at school or with family and friends.
Where to Find Help
-
Ask your child's pediatrician for a referral to a child psychologist or therapist. He can evaluate your child and guide you to appropriate treatment, which may include medication or therapy.
