Herbs for Bipolar

Bipolar disorder is a mental illness marked by extreme changes in mood from severely depressed to energetic or euphoric, called mania. Conventional treatment for bipolar disorder typically involves psychological counseling and mood-stabilizing medications. Although medication is almost always required to allow a person with bipolar disorder to function properly, herbal treatments are sometimes used as supplements. Herbs have the appeal of being a natural form of medicine, but this does not necessarily guarantee safety.
  1. Warning

    • It is extremely important to consult a medical professional and/or herbal practitioner before undergoing any type of herbal treatment. Many herbs can cause negative side effects or dangerous drug interactions, so never attempt to treat yourself. Another important point is that the FDA does not require herbal products to provide extensive research on their effectiveness. Any claims made about the product may or may not be true, so do your research before you purchase. Read product labels carefully and see if the company can provide you with any information regarding the scientific evaluation of the product.

    Ginseng

    • The energizing effects of ginseng make it a useful herb in treating depression accompanied by fatigue, loss of interest and lethargy. This herb is not, however, a good option for someone who is experiencing an episode of mania since the ginseng may actually worsen it.

    St. John's Wort

    • St. John's wort is another herb that may have some use for treating bipolar disorder, but it can also be dangerous. It is believed to increase serotonin levels in the brain, relieving depression. Because of its effect on serotonin, however, St. John's wort can interact very badly with prescription antidepressants. Since it has a bit of an antidepressant effect, it may cause a manic episode to worsen. It also may cause sensitivity to light as a side effect.

    Black Cohosh

    • Black cohosh is an herb that may provide mood-stabilizing benefits. The herb seems to bind to receptor sites for estrogen in the brain, which is thought to help regulate mood. However, black cohosh is a central nervous system depressant, so it is usually used during an episode of mania rather than depression.

    Ginkgo Biloba

    • Ginkgo biloba is an herb thought to improve blood circulation to the brain and even reduce the rate of cell death. This is thought to help reduce the frequency or severity of bipolar symptoms by improving the health and function of the brain, according to NutriGenomics of Gingko Biloba.
