Bipolar Effects on Loved Ones

Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition identified by periods of mania (or a highly elevated mood) alternating with episodes of depression. Challenging to treat, the effects of bipolar disorder on loved ones are profound.

• Loved ones have to deal with impaired judgment of a patient during a manic phase of the bipolar cycle. Impaired judgment is exhibited through such conduct as impulsive spending and acting out sexually.

• During both phases of the bipolar cycle, loved ones can be left having to assist in caring for a patient's daily needs due to her inability to do so. Care includes overseeing the hygiene and nutritional needs of a person with bipolar disorder.

Financial

• Many individuals with bipolar disorder are unable to maintain gainful employment. Loved ones sometimes end up dealing with that financial burden.

Anger

• Loved ones experience anger directed at them by the bipolar patient due to the imbalance and uncertainty in that individual's life and ability to function. Anger can take the form of verbal abuse and flash rage.

Physical Abuse

• Loved ones of a person with bipolar disorder face the prospect of physical abuse at the hands of the person with the disorder. Physical abuse is more common with a patient who is not properly medicated and who utilizes mind-altering substances.
