How to Treat Bipolar

Cycles of intense happiness and extreme sadness are typical of bipolar disorder--a serious and difficult mental health disorder. But regardless of whether you face a mild or severe form of bipolar, there are ways to treat this condition and take charge of mood swings.

Instructions

    • 1

Control symptoms with medication. Various medications (antidepressants, mood stabilizers and anti-psychotic drugs) are prescribed by doctors for the treatment of bipolar disorder, and the type of medication depends on the severity. Listen to your doctor's instruction and take your medication as directed.

    • 2

Acknowledge bipolar triggers. A family history of mental illness and personal experiences play a role in bipolar disorder. Consider counseling or psychotherapy to help you cope with sadness and determine feelings or circumstances that provoke depression.

    • 3

Eliminate alcohol. According to the Mayo Clinic, drugs and alcohol prompt depression. Refrain from both to control mood swings and ward off a bipolar episode.

    • 4

Incorporate at least 30 minutes of activity into your day to help fight bipolar episodes and depression. Exercise increases your body's supply of two important brain chemicals--dopamine and serotonin.

    • 5

Join a support group. Ask your doctor or local counselor about local support groups. Joining a group and connecting with other bipolar sufferers can help you manage this mental illness.

    • 6

Reduce stress. Anxiety and mental agony are also bipolar triggers. Practice relaxation techniques (breathing exercises, listening to calming music or getting a massage), get plenty of rest and give yourself realistic goals.

    • 7

Talk with your doctor and see if you're able to combine natural supplements with your medication. Supplements such as omega-3, vitamin B12, Sam-E and St. John's Wort help fight anxiety and depression.
