Side Effects of Taking Seroquel

Doctors prescribe Seroquel to treat bipolar and schizophrenic disorders. It is indicated for adults and children over the age of 10. It changes the actions of brain chemicals in order to treat these disorders.

  1. Side Effects to Report Right Away

    • If you are taking this drug and experience symptoms of diabetes, rapid weight gain or abnormal muscle movements, call your doctor right away.

    Tardive Dyskinesia

    • Tardive dyskinesia, a possible Seroquel side effect, is characterized by tics and uncontrollable muscle spasms. It is found mainly in older female patients.

    Dementia

    • Elderly people who have been diagnosed with dementia should not take Seroquel. It can cause heart failure, pneumonia and sudden death.

    Suicidal Thoughts

    • As with any antidepressant, Seroquel can cause suicidal thoughts and worsened depression. This mainly occurs at the beginning of treatment, or in the event of a change of dosage. While this side effect predominantly affects children and teens, it has been seen in adults as well.

    Other Side Effects

    • Some minor side effects may include drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation and dizziness. Some patients also have experienced heart palpitations, stomach upset and headache.
