Bipolar Herbal Treatment
According to the Mayo Clinic, bipolar disorder is classified as a mental illness that causes mild to severe mood instability. This disorder can also cause manic behavior as well as severe depression. The cause of bipolar disorder is unknown; however, it is believed that a biochemical reaction is the culprit behind this sometimes debilitating condition. While there are synthetic treatments that relieve the symptoms of bipolar, there are also herbal remedies that can help stabilize chemicals within the brain. Speak with your physician before starting any bipolar treatment program.-
St. John's Wort
-
According to the University of Maryland, St. John's wort has been utilized for its medicinal qualities for millennia. The main uses of this herb are to treat various nervous disorders, which include anxiety, depression and bipolar disorder. According to studies outlined by the University of Maryland's Alternative Medicine Center, this herb has shown to be beneficial for mild to moderate spouts of depression; however, it is not an effective treatment for severe depression and anxiety. The main active ingredient within St. John's wort is hypercin. This compound is believed to support the brain in the production of serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine. By stimulating the secretion of these chemicals it allows the mood to be enhanced and balanced. This herb is available in capsules, teas and liquid extracts. The easiest method of supplementing with St. John's wort is through capsules or tablets. Adults should consume 300 milligrams 3 times per day with 8 ounces of water. If you are currently taking any antidepressants or other medications for bipolar disorder, speak with your physician before supplementing with St. John's wort.
Lavender
-
Bipolar disorder can cause episodes of mania, or extreme depression/anxiety. By relaxing the mind and body, these episodes can be shortened or eliminated. Lavender is commonly used as a fragrance in shampoos, soaps and perfumes for its relaxing and pleasant smell. According to the University of Maryland, when lavender is inhaled it produces a sedative effect within the brain. By promoting relaxation, the user will be able to reduce the frequency of depression and other symptoms of this disorder. Lavender is available in a wide variety of forms, which include aromatherapy oils, soaps, lotions and teas. To treat bipolar disorder with lavender, consume 3 cups of lavender tea per day. Prepare this tea by placing 2 teaspoons of dried lavender into 8 ounces of boiling hot water. Cover and allow the dried herb to steep for 15 minutes before straining and consuming. To sweeten, add 1 tablespoon of pure agave nectar. While dried lavender flowers are safe to be made into a tea, never ingest pure lavender oil as this can cause serious health complications.
