Variations in the Behaviors of People With Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder can result in a variety of behaviors. The manic symptoms of bipolar disorder, such as poor judgment and lack of impulse control, are typically the culprits for bad behavior. Depression associated with bipolar disorder can create dangerous behaviors as well.
  1. Increased Spending

    • Spending unrealistic amounts of money outside of her means is characteristic bipolar disorder. These individuals may gamble up to thousands of dollars or go on extensive shopping sprees, at times leaving herself and her family in financial ruin.

    Heightened Libido

    • Experiencing an increased desire for sex may result in extramarital affairs or other types of sexual behavior apart from the norm. Heightened interest in sexual activity can be part of an individual's experience of bipolar disorder.

    Thrill Seeking

    • Engaging in illegal activities, such as shoplifting or high-speed car chases, might result during an episode of mania. Manic individuals may seek out excitement or risk due the symptoms of elevated mood, feeling grandiose and invincible.

    Aggression

    • Threatening others and verbally or physically assaulting someone can be symptomatic of bipolar disorder. Mania can induce paranoia and/or psychotic symptoms that can put a person at a higher risk for aggressive behavior.

    Suicidal Behavior

    • Making plans for suicide and following through with potential overdoses or other suicide attempts is characteristic of severe bipolar disorder. Sinking into a deep depression shortly after a manic episodes is an especially vulnerable time for patients.
