Treatment Centers for Bipolar Disorder

People who have had trouble managing their bipolar disorder on their own may seek out some sort of treatment center to help them learn to manage their disorder more effectively. There are many different types of treatment centers available for people with bipolar disorder and the one they choose depends greatly on what their specific needs are.
  1. Psychiatric Hospitals

    • There are psychiatric hospitals that specialize in or are specifically for bipolar disorder. Private psychiatric hospitals are not the terrible places they appear to be in the media. In fact most of the places don't look very different from a regular hospital. Patients are carefully monitored and often meet with a psychiatrist weekly. In addition there are many group therapy sessions available where the patient can talk with others about their disorder and learn coping skills.

    Boarding Schools

    • Parents who have teenagers with bipolar disorder have the option of sending their child to a special boarding school for children with this disorder. This is an excellent option for parents that are ill-equipped to handle the needs of a teenager with bipolar disorder. Bipolar teens are given coping skills that will help them to identify symptoms of mania and depression, identify triggers to episodes and function even during an episode.

    Family Centers

    • A family treatment center not only helps the person with bipolar disorder, but their family as well. Together they learn about the disorder as well as various tools to prevent and cope with episodes. This type of treatment helps the patient to begin to develop a stable support group, namely their family. This is ideal for patients who are close with their families and want their help and support in learning to manage their illness.

    Rehab

    • Many people with bipolar disorder suffer from some sort of drug or alcohol addiction. For this reason there are rehab treatment centers for people with bipolar disorder and other psychiatric disorders. Not only will this type of program help them overcome their addiction, but it will help the patient to understand how their illness has contributed to their problem. The programs also help in treating bipolar disorder, as this can often help with treating the addiction.

    Religious

    • There are many treatment centers that have some sort of religious affiliation. This type of treatment center is meant for patients with bipolar disorder that are also religious and want to understand their disorder in terms of their religious beliefs. These treatment centers can be very different from each other, depending on the religious affiliation.
