Bipolar Symptoms in Toddlers
Bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depressive disorder, is a mental illness characterized by extreme swings in mood and behavior. Bipolar disorder is difficult to recognize in toddlers, as they are unable to express what they are feeling, and the symptoms--which are different from those in adults and even young children--are often mistaken for other disorders, or even just the behavior of an unruly child. Bipolar disorder is treatable, however, and the earlier the diagnosis is made, the better chance the bipolar toddler has for a healthy life.-
Hyperactivity
-
Bipolar toddlers may be extremely hyperactive and have difficulty paying attention. This is often misdiagnosed as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, so it is important to rule out bipolar disorder before medication is administered.
Temper Tantrums
-
A bipolar toddler is easily upset and angered. This anger will often be expressed through extremely out-of-control, drawn-out tantrums.
Destructive Tendencies
-
A bipolar toddler may engage in destructive behavior, like intentionally damaging objects in his home or destroying his own clothes or toys.
Defiance
-
A bipolar toddler may seem pushy and domineering. She may be unwilling to comply with parental instruction.
Separation Anxiety
-
A toddler with bipolar disorder may be exceptionally needy. He may desire to be with you constantly, needing more than the normal amount of attention.
Sleep Disturbance
-
It may be difficult to get a bipolar toddler to sleep. Her sleep may at times be very erratic, if she sleeps at all.
