What Are the Signs of Being Bipolar?

Bipolar disorder is characterized by cycling from an extremely high emotional state (mania) to an extremely low emotional state (depression). Manic or depressive episodes can last for hours, days, weeks or even months, with or without periods of normal emotional activity between. Knowing the signs of bipolar disorder is important to get a diagnosis and proper treatment.
  1. Symptoms of Mania

    • Manic symptoms include sleeplessness, talking quickly, a need to constantly be moving, feelings of euphoria and increased optimism and self-esteem.

    Symptoms of Depression

    • Depressive symptoms include fatigue, feelings of sadness or hopelessness, unexplainable pain, anxiety, guilt and/or suicidal thoughts.

    Psychosis

    • Both depressive and manic phases can lead to psychosis, which is loss of touch with reality. Signs of psychosis include hallucinations (such as hearing voices or seeing things that aren't there) and delusions (holding false beliefs).

    Risk-Taking

    • People with bipolar disorder are more prone to risk-taking behavior, such as drug abuse, spending sprees or risky sexual behavior.

    Cycling

    • In some cases of bipolar disorder, depressive states may be more common and long-lasting, while mania may prevail in other cases. Some people experience rapid cycling, with moods changing every few hours, while others experience both mania and depression simultaneously.
