The red flags of mania include increased energy, restlessness, rapid or incoherent speech, impaired judgment, inappropriate behavior, grandiose thinking, changes in thought patterns, hostility, feelings of exhilaration, inflated self-esteem and delusions or other changes in perception.
Signs of Depression

Signs of depression include decreased energy or activity level, lethargy, loss of interest in pleasurable activities, change in weight, change in appetite, unexplained aches and pains, prolonged sadness, unexplained or uncontrollable crying, feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or hopelessness, difficult moods, indecision, problems with memory or focus and a preoccupation with death.

Episodes of mania or depression can last for weeks or months, upsetting the lives of those who suffer from bipolar disorder and the people around them. If left untreated, bipolar disorder can lead to reckless behavior, alienation from family and friends, and suicide.
