How to Take a Psychological Test

For those that are seeking a new job that requires an assessment of one's mental well-being, or even for those whose medical care team feel that an evaluation of mental health is required; taking a psychological test may be needed. If you find yourself in a position where you must take such as test, preparing yourself in advance and knowing what will happen can help alleviate fear of the unknown.

      Schedule the test for a time that is suitable for you. Make sure to note the day, time and location in your calendar or appointment book.

      Maintain your routine. The night before the test, have a healthy and filling dinner. Do all of your normal activities and get to bed at a normal and reasonable time. Try to get at least eight ours of uninterrupted sleep the night before the test is scheduled. If your test is scheduled for later in the day, make sure to go about your daily tasks and chores. Do not dwell or obsess about the test in the days and hours leading up to your appointment.

      Arrange for someone to drive you to and from the test, if you are apprehensive or nervous. Ask that person to stay with you and wait, if you believe their presence will help calm your nerves. Arrive on time for the test and wear comfortable clothing.

      Shake hands and speak to the person giving you the test. Answer all questions to the best of your ability. Do not over think or over analyze responses, or become nervous if an answer does not immediately pop into your head. Know that no right or wrong answers exist for a psychological test. Do not get nervous when the test administrator makes notes or asks you to repeat answers. Understand that this is part of the process to ensure accuracy.

      Follow up with all relevant individuals that will receive copies of your test results. Follow all suggestions made as a result of your psychological test results.
