Signs of Grief

Signs and symptoms highlighting the experience of loss in someone's life can be categorized as physical, emotional, social and behavioral. Experts say a person who is grieving loss also goes through seven stages.
  1. Physical Signs

    • Changes in appetite or weight, sleeping problems, crying and fatigue are among some of the physical signs of grief, according to Grief Watch. The Mayo Clinic also lists stomach upset and nightmares as signs of grief.

    Emotional Signs

    • Grief Watch states that sadness, loneliness and anxiety are among some of the emotional signs of grief.

    Social Signs

    • Lack of interest in usual activities as a sign of grief. Other social signs of grief include being dependent, withdrawn or overly sensitive, having a lack of initiative or interest, and avoiding others.

    Behavioral Signs

    • Some of the behavioral signs of grief include slowed thinking, forgetfulness, wandering aimlessly and dreams of the deceased.

    Stages of Grief

    • Experts list seven stages of grief that one experiences during a loss. These include shock or disbelief, denial, bargaining, guilt, anger, depression, acceptance and hope.
