The Best Careers for Sufferers of ADD

Attention deficit disorder, or ADD, is not a condition that only affects children. According to WebMD, at least 8 million adults have ADD. This condition can make it difficult for people to hold down a job, with many performing poorly and changing employers often. Adults with ADD may do better in work environments that accommodate their need for greater stimulation and frequent changes so they do not get bored.

  1. Freelance Writer

    • While desk jobs are not ideal for people with ADD, working as a freelance writer is a possible exception. Because freelance writers can set their own schedules, people can get up and do other activities whenever they get bored with their work and go back to finish their work later. Freelance writing also suits people with ADD because you get to work on different projects on a frequent basis; by the time you get bored with one, it's time to move on to a different topic.

    Gym Teacher

    • Any job that allows a lot of movement is usually good for people with ADD or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Jobs that require a lot of physical activity include a gym teacher. These positions allow for movement and helping others, which is another task many people with ADD enjoy.

Detective work allows people to interview potential suspects and witnesses, conduct research and perform reenactments of crimes. As with the other careers mentioned, this one also offers a significant amount of variety to keep the person with ADD interested.

    Business Owner

    • Many people with ADD get bored with careers easily, which is most likely to happen when they are not interested in their work. One way for people to stay passionate about their work is to open their own business. Business owners usually have to do many different tasks to make the business successful, which means not getting bored by doing the same thing every day.
