Dementia

• Dementia refers to a group of symptoms, including memory loss, cognitive decline, changes in personality, behavioral and mood disturbances, and hallucinations, caused by conditions and disorders that affect the brain. According to MayoClinic.com, Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia.

Home Care

• According to HelpGuide.org, establishing daily routines and a safe environment are important factors of home care. As dementia progresses, the patient may require a level of care that can no longer be provided in the home.

Respite Care

• Respite care refers to friends, family or paid caregivers providing temporary help in caring for someone with dementia. Respite care allows the primary caregiver a chance to take time for himself.

Assisted Living

• An assisted living facility is where those with dementia may reside and receive assistance in caring for themselves to the extent that they need such help. An assisted living facility may provide meals, recreation and assistance with daily tasks such as bathing and getting dressed.

Nursing Facilities

• Nursing facilities, which may also be referred to as nursing homes, can provide round-the-clock care for those in the late stages of progressive types of dementia, such as Alzheimer’s disease. Skilled nurses provide medical attention and therapy in these facilities.
